Tops & Open Tops for Weaving and Knitting

Tops

Our tops, processed from the finest raw materials, are obtained by washing, carding and combing long, fine fibers, which are aligned in a parallel direction in a uniform sliver.

This sliver, known as “top”, is versatile and ideal for various weaving applications. Its uniformity ensures consistency in yarn production.

This process yields a smooth, uniform fiber bundle that is ideal for spinning into worsted yarn.

Worsted yarn is typically used for high-quality fabrics, especially for suiting, due to its smooth texture and strength.

Key Features

  • Long, fine fibers combed in a parallel direction
  • Smooth and uniform texture
  • Ideal for making strong, refined worsted yarn used in formal fabrics

Open Tops

An open top for woolen is produced by carding and combing shorter wool fibers, which are not aligned as in worsted wool.

The result is a bulkier, loose fiber that is perfect for spinning into woolen yarn.

As a warm, cozy fabric, it is ideal for sweaters, jumpers, blankets, and scarves. Its loose structure retains the natural alignment of fibers, making it also perfect for hand spinning and knitting.

Open tops provide texture and depth in knitting projects, enhancing creativity and allowing for unique designs.

Key Features:

  • Shorter, softer fibers carded to create a loose, open structure
  • Fluffy, bulkier texture
  • Ideal for making soft, insulating woolen yarn used in both classic and casual fabrics

Additional Products from Wool processing

Lanolin

Lanolin, extracted during the wool scouring process, is a natural, waxy substance derived from the grease of raw wool. This unique by-product is highly valued for its moisturizing and protective properties, making it a key ingredient in skincare, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products.

Lanolin is widely used in cosmetics and medical ointments due to its ability to deeply hydrate and protect the skin. Its versatility also makes it ideal for hair care, lubricants, and water-resistant coatings.

Key Features

  • Natural moisturizer with excellent hydrating properties
  • Sustainably extracted during wool processing
  • Versatile applications in skincare, medical, and industrial products

Noils

Noils are the shortest, finest wool fibers removed during the combing process. While not suitable for worsted spinning, these fibers are a valuable by-product recycled in a variety of industries to produce coarser woolen yarns as well as mattress filling and insulation.

These shorter fibers are typically repurposed into woolen yarns or non-woven products, contributing to sustainable practices by minimizing waste.

Key Features:

  • Short, fine fibers removed during combing
  • Ideal for woolen yarn, felts, and industrial applications
  • Supports sustainable wool processing by repurposing waste material
